    Product Recommendations and Tips
What products are the fastest for killing fleas and ticks on my pet?
Shampoos, wipes, sponge-ons, and on-animal sprays work fast because they are applied directly to a petís entire coat and quickly penetrate to the skin. It takes just a few minutes for the fleas to die when they come in contact with the active ingredients. These quick-relief products are Step 2 of Zodiacís 3-Step Program for complete control.

Which flea and tick control products are the longest lasting?
Spot Ons and Collars provide long-lasting, continuous protection with one easy application. Zodiac Spot Ons protect for up to one month, with a four month supply in each package. Every Zodiac Collar provides several months of control. These products are recommended for long-term maintenance and protection, and they are Step 2 of Zodiacís 3 Step Program.

Is it necessary to treat my home or my yard?
When you treat your home and yard, youíll give your pet faster and more complete relief. The fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes you see are only a small percentage of the total population developing in your petís environment. Zodiac offers a complete line of Step 3 premise control products to control fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and a wide variety of insects that pester your family.

Are there any Zodiac products for pets other than dogs and cats?

Yes. Zodiac offers the following products for horses and ponies to control flying insects and other pests: Zodiac Triple Action Conditioning Flea & Tick Shampoo for Dogs, Cats & Horses, Pre-Strike Wipe Away for Horses and Ponies, and Pre-Strike Bot Fly and Mosquito Repellent for Horses & Ponies. Do Zodiac products have expiration dates?

No, Zodiac products do not carry expiration dates. Our products will remain effective long after their date of manufacture when they are stored according to label directions. For best results, we do recommend using any flea and tick product within two to three years of purchase.

Will Zodiac products still work if my pets get shampooed or wet in the rain?

Yes. If your pets sometimes get wet in the rain during short walks, or you bath them occasionally with a mild shampoo, this should not interfere with the effectiveness of a Zodiac product. However, if your pets get wet frequently or are bathed with a detergent soap, the effectiveness of some products may diminish. For pets who are bathed frequently, the best choice would be a collar.  Zodiac Flea & Tick Collars continue to release a new supply of active ingredients for several months, replenishing the coat even if your pet gets wet or is given a bath.

If my pet has a lot of fleas, can I use more than one on-animal product at time?

It shouldnít be necessary to treat your pet with more than one product at the same time. Using two products at once will not necessarily kill fleas and ticks any faster. The trick is using the right products at the right time, with a step-by-step approach. If youíre seeing many fleas or ticks on your pet, first use a fast acting Step 1 product to give your pet immediate relief. Then, for on-going maintenance, apply a Step 2 on-animal product for longer term protection. And to keep your petís surrounding environment under control, treat your home and yard with a Zodiac Step 3 premise control product.

    Tick Prevention
What are the best products to use for killing ticks on my dog?

All Zodiac products labeled to kill ticks will be effective, but some formulations work faster or last longer than others. Ticks can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to die after being exposed to the active ingredients in the product. The quickest way to kill ticks is to expose them directly to a wet product like a shampoo, spray, wipe, or sponge-on (dip). While Zodiac Collars or Spot Ons may kill ticks at a slightly slower rate, they provide the longest term protection. Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On for Dogs kills ticks for up to 30 days, while Zodiac FleaTrol Flea & Tick Collars provide control for up to 5 months.

How long will it take to get rid of ticks in my home?

Once ticks infest a home, it can take several weeks to get the problem under control. Even if youíre consistently using a tick control product on your pet, you may see ticks from time to time.  Itís very easy for pets to pick up ticks from infested areas indoors, as well as outdoor environments that we cannot control. You can help prevent re-infestation of the home by using tick control products on your pet throughout the entire season.

What areas of my home should I treat for ticks?

Itís important to be very thorough when treating because ticks can move around a house quite easily. Treat all carpeting and upholstered furniture with Zodiac premise control products. Ticks often hide in crevices and underneath furniture, as well in baseboards. They climb vertically, so itís important to treat the sides and backs of upholstered furniture. You may also see ticks on walls and other smooth, vertical surfaces. Check these surfaces, and remove ticks in any places you are not able to spray. Pay special attention to closets, storage places, and other areas where ticks can hide under or behind objects.

Where does my pet usually pick up ticks?

Your pet can pick up ticks in a variety of places, but ticks are most prevalent in thickly vegetated areas outdoors. Many of the places we take our pets for recreation, like parks, wooded areas, and even our own back yards can be hot-beds for infestation. Some ticks thrive in the dark, moist areas underneath objects and plants, where they can hide from view. They can also climb vertical surfaces, like the sides of fences, trees, or tall grass. Ticks can then easily attach themselves to a pet or person who is simply passing by.

What areas of my yard should I treat for ticks?

Treating your entire yard will give you the best protection against ticks. However, ticks are most often found in brushy, woody, and tall grass areas. Treating with an insecticide product, such as Pre-Strike Yard & Garden Spray, and keeping your lawn mowed and bushes trimmed, will be helpful in reducing the tick population.

What can I do to prevent my pets form picking up ticks?

Products that repel ticks, like Zodiac Spot On for Dogs, Zodiac Flea & Tick Spray, and Zodiac Wipes, are extremely helpful in reducing the number of ticks your pet may pick up.   Avoiding woody or grassy tick habitats will reduce your petís chances of encountering ticks.  Also checking your pet regularly for ticks will give you the best chance of finding and removing them before they can cause a problem.

    Safety Questions
Can I use a Zodiac product on a species of animal that is not listed on the label?

We would not recommend using any Zodiac product on any species of animal that is not listed on the label. When a flea and tick product is labeled for a specific type of pet, this means that the appropriate testing has been done to support safe and effective use on that particular animal. If you donít see your type of pet on the label, we recommend that you consult your veterinarian for treatment advice.

Is it okay for children to play with pets who have been treated with Zodiac products?

Once a product has dried, itís okay for children and adults to have close contact with their pets again. Our products are formulated knowing that children will play, pet, and even sleep with pets. When used according to label directions, the amount of active ingredient present on the pet is a tiny flea or tick-sized dose. Children can also play with pets wearing collars, since collars release a very small amount of active ingredient at a very slow rate.

Is it okay for children and pets to play on the floor after home treatment?

Once a liquid product is dry, or a powder is worked in and vacuumed, itís okay for children and pets to play on carpeting, upholstered furniture, and other treated areas in the home. Zodiac premise products are designed with the understanding that children and pets will have close and direct contact with carpet and upholstery, the very areas that need to be treated for flea and tick control.

How long should I wait before I allow my children and pets back into treated areas in the home?

Some premise product labels give a specific time frame for re-entering the treated area, so the label should always be checked first. For example, the Zodiac Fogger label lists specific times for keeping the treated area closed and for airing it out before returning. As a rule of thumb, we recommend waiting at least 20 minutes when using Zodiac Carpet and Upholstery Aerosol Spray and 1 hour when using Zodiac Carpet and Upholstery Pump Spray in your home.

Is it okay for my pet to groom or lick herself after a Zodiac product is applied?

Normal grooming after application is expected and should not be a problem when a product is used according to label directions. The amount of active ingredient in each dose is just enough to be effective against a flea, tick or other targeted pest. The pet, which is much larger than the targeted pest, should not be affected by this small amount of active ingredient. All of our products have been designed and tested for use on dogs and/or cats, knowing they will groom themselves.

    Mosquito Control
What products can I use to give my pets and my family relief from mosquitoes?

Zodiac offers a complete line of mosquito control products to help protect your pets and your entire family. To quickly kill and repel mosquitoes on your pets, use any Zodiac on-animal spray, wipe, Spot On for Dogs, or Triple Action Shampoo. For human family members, Zodiac offers a repellent with DEET called PreStrike Mosquito Repellent. For your yard, choose from Zodiacís outdoor products including Pre-Strike Yard and Garden Spray and Pre-Strike Outdoor Fogger. And for mosquito prevention, use Pre-Strike mosquito larvicide granules to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in standing water around your home.

Where should I apply Pre-Strike mosquito larvicide granules?

Apply Pre-Strike granules to bird baths, water gardens, animal watering troughs, and any other water holding receptacle. The granules are also ideal for treating areas around your property where water may collect, such as gutters, tree holes, depressions in the ground, and flower pots. By applying the granules to these areas, youíll prevent mosquito infestations from developing for up to 30 days.

Why do I sometimes see live mosquito larvae in water Iíve already treated with Pre-Strike granules?

The larvae exposed to water treated with Pre-Strike granules will not die right away. You will continue to see the larvae moving around in the water. The larvae will continue to develop, and will die during the pupal stage. Mosquito larvae that have been exposed to water treated with Pre-Strike granules will not develop into adult mosquitoes.

Is it okay for animals to drink from water that has been treated with Pre-Strike granules?

Yes. The EPA has approved Pre-Strike granules containing the insect growth regulator (S)-Methoprene for use in animal watering troughs for mosquito control. Since it only takes a few days for mosquito larvae to develop in standing water, itís a good idea to apply the granules to any water holding receptacle that cannot be emptied at least twice weekly.

    Flea Control Expectations and Troubleshooting
How many home treatments are usually needed to get rid of fleas?
One or two home treatments is usually all that is needed to get a flea infestation under control. First, we recommend at least one thorough home treatment. Then, if you continue to see fleas, re-treat your home in about 10-14 days. Once the adult fleas are gone, the Zodiac home premise product youíve already applied will prevent future infestations by killing flea eggs for up to 7 or 12 months, depending on the specific product.
Why do I sometimes see fleas after treating my pets and my home?

Itís not unusual to see fleas for about 2-3 weeks after youíve begun treating. This is because some fleas that were already developing in the pupal stage when you started to treat will emerge from their protective cocoons. These pupal or ďcocoonĒ fleas, which can survive treatment with any product, take about 1 to 2 weeks to develop before emerging as adults. The good news is, as these fleas emerge from their cocoons, they will be killed by the products youíve already applied to your home and pets. Re-treating your home in about 10-14 days should knock out the final generation of fleas.

What if my pet brings fleas in from outside, do I have to start over again?

No, not if your pets and home have already been treated with products that contain Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) for on-going flea egg control. Zodiac on-animal products that contain an IGR provide flea egg control for one or several months, depending on the product.  Our premise control products will prevent flea eggs and flea larvae from developing from up to 7 months to one year. Occasional fleas seen on the pet should only be a temporary nuisance when an IGR is used both on your pets and in your home

What are the most important places in the home to treat?

Carpet, upholstered furniture, pet bedding, and favorite pet resting areas should be targeted. Be sure to treat underneath beds and other furniture, sofa cushions, and in closets. Flea larvae thrive in dark, hidden places. Zodiac premise control products are designed to penetrate to the base of carpeting and into crevices of furniture when applied to these areas.

Do I need to treat my whole house, even where my pet is not allowed?

Itís a good idea to treat all the carpeting and upholstery in your home at least one time. Flea eggs, the size of sand grains, are very rarely seen but easily spread by your pet. A female flea may lay as many as 40-50 eggs on your pet a day, which fall off into your petís environment. Your pet can deposit a large number of eggs just by being in any area of your home for a brief moment. In addition, the flea larvae that hatch out from these eggs can migrate for several feet into areas your pet may never have actually been.

Should non-carpeted areas, like wood or tiled floors, be treated with a premise product?
Treating wood floors, tile, linoleum and other smooth floorings/surfaces should not be necessary. Carpet and upholstery are the ideal environments for fleas in the home. We do recommend that you clean, mop, and vacuum all floors to remove any flea eggs that might have been deposited by your pet. Special attention should be paid to flooring underneath all furniture and other large objects, baseboards, as well as in closets, storage areas, garages, etc. The more hidden, undisturbed areas could harbor fleas and should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any pre-adult fleas that may be developing.

What about my beds and mattresses?

If your pets go on or near your bed, these areas can be hot spots for fleas. You can take care of this problem easily by machine washing or professionally cleaning all of your bedding. We do not recommend treating your mattress or box spring. Fleas do not burrow and will not infest the interior of the mattress or the box spring. If you are concerned that fleas may have gotten on an exposed mattress, vacuuming the mattress would be a good idea. Be sure to treat the area underneath and behind your bed, since itís easy for flea eggs to fall from the bedding into surrounding areas. Often the fleas you think are in the bed are really coming from underneath or behind it.

How often should I vacuum my home when treating for fleas?
For best results, we recommend that you vacuum right before any home treatment, and frequently between treatments. The heat and vibration from the vacuum will stimulate adult fleas to emerge from pupal cocoons so they can be quickly killed when exposed to the treated carpeting. If you are still seeing fleas after your first home treatment, we recommend vacuuming every day if possible, or every other day, for about 2 weeks. Then treat your home one more time to kill off the last remaining generation of fleas.
Is it really necessary to wait a full 2 weeks before re-treating my home, even if Iím still seeing fleas now?

Even though it can be frustrating to see fleas, re-treating your home immediately will not solve the problem any faster. The best strategy is to wait 10-14 days. While your first treatment will kill existing flea eggs, flea larvae and adult fleas, new adult fleas already forming within protective cocoons will continue to emerge after treatment. It usually takes about one to two weeks for pupal fleas to mature and emerge from their cocoons. When you re-treat in two weeks time, youíll be able to quickly kill the remaining population and bring your infestation under complete control.

How do I keep fleas from coming back and infesting my pet and home?

While you canít prevent fleas in the environment from jumping on your pet, you can prevent them from infesting your home and your petsí favorite areas. Zodiac makes a variety of on-animal products with an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) to kill flea eggs. Since fleas lay their eggs on the pet, on-animal flea egg control prevents infestation right at the source. Our premise control products also contain an IGR to kill flea eggs and flea larvae for 7 or 12 months, depending on the product. This will help prevent pre-adult fleas that may already be present in the environment from maturing and jumping back on your pet.
